Add Captions to a Video

Adding captions is a multi-step process. First you will have to create an SRT file with the start time and end time of each caption. Then you will have to add it to the video through Mediaspace and ensure that it shows up the way you want it.

Create SRT File

An SRT file is a text file, but it follows a strict format:

#
HH:MM:SS,sss –> HH:MM:SS,sss
Caption text.

# = the number of the caption in order
HH = the hours (ie, 1 hour = 01. Note that the first 0 is not optional for this or any other parameter! )
MM = the minutes
SS = the seconds
sss = the milliseconds

Example File:

1
00:00:15,000 –> 00:00:20,500
This is caption text! It will appear on-screen starting at 15 seconds for 5.5 seconds!

2
01:00:00,000 –> 01:00:15,000
This caption text will appear on-screen starting at the 1 hour mark for 15 seconds.

To create your own SRT file follow these steps:

  1. Write down all of your captions in one text file (using a simple text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit). Each caption should be on a separate line (not including word wrap).
    • Example:
      This is caption text! It will appear on-screen starting at 15 seconds for 5.5 seconds!
      This caption text will appear on-screen starting at the 1 hour mark for 15 seconds.
  2. Go through the video in a video player and mark down the start times and end times for each video. Put these times above the desired caption, and put “–>” (two – symbols followed by a > ) in between each start and end time.
    • Example:
      00:00:15,000 –> 00:00:20,500
      This is caption text! It will appear on-screen starting at 15 seconds for 5.5 seconds!
      01:00:00,000 –> 01:00:15,000
      This caption text will appear on-screen starting at the 1 hour mark for 15 seconds.
  3. Above each time, add a number in order starting from 1 for the first caption.
    • Example:
      1
      00:00:15,000 –> 00:00:20,500
      This is caption text! It will appear on-screen starting at 15 seconds for 5.5 seconds!
      2
      01:00:00,000 –> 01:00:15,000
      This caption text will appear on-screen starting at the 1 hour mark for 15 seconds.
  4. Review your file for typos and syntax errors.
  5. Save the file with a .SRT extension. Add quotation marks around your file so your text editor does not try to save a text file. (ie: “caption.srt”)
