Process Post 11/11

For my final paper, since the topic Gender and Sexuality is so wide, I have decided to talk about one main important issue that is relevant in society today; feminism. In the past, I have posted many articles about feminism, what it means, how people view it, where it is found, and how one identifies as one. For this paper, I have decided to research more on the negative views of feminism instead of what it does for the world. Throughout my research process for all the other papers, I have picked out a few recurring themes and finally found one that would be worth talking about. Since this paper has to be connected to Rollins in a way, I thought that my thesis should include the fact that women do not identify themselves as feminists in college because men view them negatively. This is very relevant to Rollins as well because there have been many cases where girls I am friends with have decided feminism is not something they are even though they believe in everything a feminist says. The way feminism has been viewed for centuries has made it seem that it is a bad thing to identify as one. However, what feminists try to do is progress the world in a way in which women and men become equal. Thus, hopefully, my research consultation and my own process help me find relevant articles that I can use for this paper.

This week I had some productive help finding sources.  I had my research consultation with Erin, which was helpful for finding some new ways of phrasing the topics I am looking at, which has helped me find a wider variety of sources.  She helped me find the source on self-sexualizing, and also reminded me that I can look in some of my sources citations, to see if any of those sources would also be a good match.  I also posted a source from the Rollins Archives, which was really interesting.  I really enjoyed going and seeing a lot of the information that has been kept throughout the years at Rollins.  I am a huge history nerd, so I loved getting to see everything that has contributed to how Rollins has become what it is today.  I hope to continue on this path of information.  My topic has developed to involve more than one social issue, because in my mind the issues connect so I hope to find some good sources that I can easily connect the issues of sexual objectification, and the issue of rape culture.

I surprisingly went with a different route when finding my articles. I was stuck on trying to find something interesting that I have not tried Googling before. I decided to look at my topic at a different angle. I thought of what college students do that can bring extra stress to their lives. I immediately thought of lack of sleep. I then went to Google and instantly found two great articles that I could use for my research. For my last article I looked at what could improve for the student-athlete, another topic of mine. I decided to research paying student-athletes and whether it should happen or not. I found that it could be beneficial to pay athletes while in college. I was able to look at my topics at a different angle and find great new information.

Techniques for Sleep

imagesA sign of stress includes not being able to fall asleep and receive a full night’s sleep. Not receiving adequate sleep only adds to the stressor. The article reviewed on WebMD offers insight on how one can help reduce stress in order to have a full night’s sleep. Step one is to assess the stressor. You must know the stressor in order to know how to deal with it. Next one could seek the support of others. Others help could be key in getting out of the stress cycle. Another tip is to exercise daily. Exercise can help blow off steam from the day and leave the mind clear. A clear mind can help tremendously for sleep. Finally, one could eat healthily. For example, eating a lot of sugar before bed can lead to unrest and less sleep. In all sleep is very important to one’s health and level of stress. There are a number of different ways in which to maximize sleep. These techniques should be used in order to maximize sleep and in turn lessen stress and increase focus throughout the day.

“Rules and Regulations”

This piece is from our day in the Rollins College Archives.  There was so much valuable information, but this one really popped out to me.  This is a rules and regulations book from, what the archivists estimate, around 1961-1962.  It has all the rules for men, women, and general rules.  I found this interesting because of the types of rules that the college used to have, and the huge difference between the rules for men, and the rules for women.  In the book, men had one page front and back of rules that only applied to them.  Women had about 6 front and back.  Just the difference in number shows the sexism of the college back then.  The women had a full page front about dressing and how to dress when, where as men had a third of a page.  Men had three sections of rules; personal conduct, dormitory regulations, and dress.  Women had four major sections, with a total of 16 subsections under the four main sections.  Some of these rules are understandable for living in a shared space, but the majority of them are rules just for being a woman.

In this article, these authors analyzed children’s clothing, and how sexualized they were.  They looked at clothing for all minors in multiple store, to get a variety.  They discovered that about  30% of children’s clothing is being sexualized through cuts, fabrics, patterns, etc.  The other approximately 70 percent is classified as being only made to be childlike.  They also narrowed it down, saying that the majority of the sexualized clothing is primarily found in the tween’s clothing section, being the oldest section that they analyzed.  This makes sense when thinking about it.  Teens for a while have been wearing the most sexual clothing, and before that it was people in their 20s, the age is lowering, but not skipping age groups.  This shows how our society works, once it has sexualized the majority of an age group, it plays off of the want of a child to look and act old, to start selling sexualized clothes to the next age group of people.  It is also an interesting article, because it is written by two of the authors that authored a prior source of mine about self-sexualization.

Anti-Feminist Backlash

“Anti-feminist backlash: The role of system justification in the role of feminism” is a peer-reviewed journal that states society prolongs inequality because men are not ready for a change. System justification theory (SJT) posits that people are motivated to believe that the social system they live in is fair, desirable, and how it should be, especially in contexts that heighten the system justification motive. Past researchers have suggegrace-wang-art-feminismsted that opposition to feminists may be motivated by the threat that feminism presents to the legitimacy of the status quo and men’s place in society. Because of this view, society produces things to maintain the gender barrier. For example, some scholars have argued that we are in the midst of a media-generated backlash designed to undo the empowerment of girls and women. US popular culture targets young girls with anti-feminist messages, which undermine feminist movements. While maintaining these barriers, society does not produce positive messages to those who are trying to change the world.

The theory that women gaining more rights and power will undermine the status quo is not true. This article states that people need to understand the true meaning of feminism and how women are not trying to take over the world. Instead, they are fighting for rights that should not be restricted to them in the first place.

“Sexualizing the Self”

In this article, Smolak and her colleagues conducted a study to try and analyze the similarities and differences between males and females in the act of self-sexualizing.  They discovered concrete support for the existence of self-sexualizing of women, but not of men.  They also got very specific and consistent results from the trial, showing that women often are subject to self-sexualization, but they got no evidence of men self-sexualizing, or very few cases.  From this they conclude that self-sexualizing is less prevalent and less meaningful in men’s lives.  They also draw connections between one’s self-sexualizing, and the sexual objectification of someone. They have concluded this through a series of tests, tested the students of two small liberal arts colleges.   This article was interesting because it deals with the issue of a sexualized culture, in addition to how women are sexually objectified.  These tests were also conducted in small liberal arts schools, which is much like Rollins which could transfer some of the thoughts to our campus.  I think that this article will be one that I can fairly easily draw conclusions and connections with.

Older and Younger Adults’ Attitudes Toward Feminism

“Older and Younger Adults’ Attitudes Towards Feminism: The Influence of Religiosity, Political Orientation, Gender, Education, and Family” presents a study that explored attitudes toward feminism in 245 U.S. college students and their older relatives. Participants completed a scale of attitudes towards feminism, political orientation, a religiosity mphoto-2easure, and a demographic questionnaire. Results indicated that older adults were more conservative than younger adults on their attitudes towards feminism, religiosity, and political orientation measures. In the young adult sample, attitudes towards feminism were predicted by gender and political orientation, compared to older adults in which religiosity and political orientation were the best predictors. Young adults’ political views were associated with older adults’ attitudes towards feminism.

My final paper is going to revolve around feminism, in college mainly, and how many women do not identify themselves as feminists because of the views associated with the word feminism. Thus, this source will help immensely as it will help back up my main argument by providing evidence in the ways people view feminists and their work.

Stress to Sleep

gi_sleepvstress-jpgFor years our parents have told us to get to bed early for a good night’s sleep. We all know the eight hours a night rule that has been engrained in our thinking. It is safe to say that our parents were right. Eight hours of sleep is something that we should strive for every night. Not receiving adequate sleep hinders brain development and the process of neural pathway strengthening. It is found that less than 10 percent of students receive eight or more hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation can also cause health issues such as depression and headaches. These symptoms could make a hard day even worse. Sleep in college is hard to come by but not impossible. Distractions are the biggest thing that takes away from sleep. In order to eliminate distractions, try avoiding being on your phone, laptop, or any other piece of technology before going to bed. The classic five more minutes on your phone can turn into hours if not careful. Hours that could have been spent sleeping. Adequate sleep can help you get through your day with a clear and focused mind.

Pay The Student-Athlete?

2274738_origIt is no secret that college is expensive. It is also no secret that colleges and universities also make millions off of their athletic programs. College student-athletes are fed up with universities, essentially, making millions off of an athlete’s talent. College is stressful and adding a very competitive component in that of athletics makes college even more stressful. Being a college athlete is a job. You are expected to show up to every practice as well as perform at a high level in every competition. If one’s performance is not adequate you could lose your spot on the athletic roster. This type of pressure only fuels the argument on why student-athletes should get paid for their talents. Student-athletes are doing a service that goes far beyond representing their respective schools. They are huge markets for college sports in which universities can make millions of dollars off of a single player. To put it in perspective, the NCAA is a $6 billion dollar a year business. The athlete might receive a scholarship but not adequate reimbursement for how much money is being generated for the school. Student-athletes are put under a tremendous amount of stress, a little compensation will not hurt the student-athlete nor hurt the college in the end.

Process Post 10/28

This week I had a very different process for finding my sources.  Instead of looking for sources on sexual assault, I let my research be a little more organic.  By organic, I mean that I started my second paper with an idea of an opener, and the way I thought the paper would play out, but my heart and mind brought me in a completely different direction.  As my paper developed, it became a paper that connected sexualization in America to the rape culture we live in.  I already had a lot of information on Sexual Assault but had to find sources about sexualization, so I first looked up viral dress code posts, knowing that there have been many facebook posts that have gone viral, due to unfair rules or even just sexist things men have said.  I found a popular source about one of the incidents through this search.  I then looked up sexualization of children on the olin advanced search system, and found two great articles about how children are being sexualized, I connected this to sexual assault and compared the sources.

For my research this week, I wanted to continue in the area of gender in media and how it affects a wide range of people. For my scholarly post, I used the Olin Library search engine and looked at many different peer-reviewed articles until I found one on the under-representation of the LGBTQ community in media. I was not planning on writing a source post on this but then I decided I could relate this to my previous posts on the LGBTQ community to make an argument more informative and credible. For my popular post, I looked at a Buzzfeed article I saw weeks ago on Facebook. It showed the difference between male and female actors in films and how much women are actually disadvantaged in every role in the process of a film compared to males. Whether it be the amount of screen time, the person directing or producing it, or even the amount of money they get, women are lacking equal opportunities in this area of work. For my next research process and final paper, I hope to be able to find sources along these lines but contain something different each time as I already have an idea what my argument for paper 3 is going to be.

My research was very focused on my current topic: stress in student-athletes. I was able to find my scholarly source rather easily using the Olin Library advanced search with keywords ‘stress’ and ‘student-athlete.’ I narrowed my search down even further by clicking the option of only showing the scholarly articles. I was able to find a source about how athletes with injuries lower their life satisfaction while out of the sport. This was a good find for me because I am thinking about using it on my paper 2 as another source. My popular source was found rather easily. I simply Googled student-athlete stress and found an article titled Stress and The Student-Athlete. This article gave me great information on different statistics and research conducted on student-athletes and stress. I received a lot of information this WordPress that I will use on my paper 2 assignment.
